On November 15, 1863, the then Danish King Frederick VII (1808-1848-1863) died in the Glucsburg castle in Schleswig. His death ended the rule of the Oldenburg dynasty in Denmark. The problem was raised. At this time, Prussia began to become a leading force in the German Union, and since 1862 the Prussian government has been headed by politician Otto von Bismarsk (1815-1898), who argued that the two duchies could not be separated from the Union. They will work together to enforce this proposal. The highest member of the "Union", Austria, agreed with this policy. was built by Prussian General Bedrich Count Wrangel (1748-1877). The army consisted of three army corps, one commanded by the prince of the Prussian royal family (Bedřich Karel 1825-1885), the other by the Austrian general Ludvík von Gablenz (1814-1874) and the third personally by General Wrangel.
Already on February 2, the first corps managed to cross the Schlei River, and on February 3, the Austrians conquered Oberselk and Jagel. The Danes retreated to Duppel and Alsen, where military fortresses were built after the Three Years' War. The main fighting took place from March 23 to April 18, when the Danish army was defeated. Schleswig-Holstein, including Lauenerg, remained part of the German Union. The tasks have been completed.
On November 10, 1864, King William I of Prussia (1797-1861-1871), the one who became the first German emperor on January 18, 1871, founded the War Memorial Medal of 1864 for warriors of bronze captured works (Kriegs-Denkmunze 1864, fur Kampfer, made of bronze Danish geyschutze 1864). The medal was established in agreement with the Austrian Emperor Franz Josef I. The statutes were published on November 20, 1864. The medal was intended for officers, non-commissioned officers and men, as well as military doctors, clergy and officials who from February 1 to the date of Peace of August 2, 1864 performed the function and crossed the border of Holstein. It was also intended for sailors who served on ships during the war, both in the East Sea (Ostsee), but especially for those who participated in the service of the North Sea Navy. (Nordseegeschwader).
The medal is circular with a diameter of 29 mm with a thickness of 2 mm. .) The reverse side of the medal bears in the middle of the four-line inscription: UNSERN/TAPFERN/KRIEGERN/1864 (To our brave warriors 1864). stripe in width 16mm and on the sides 8mm wide stripe white and on the opposite side the same stripe yellow (Image with the ribbon of the Iron Cross) The edge of the medal bears a description: AUS EROBERT GESCHUETZ it is From the conquered cannon.
At the same time, another medal is minted and it is the War Commemorative Medal 1864 for non-combatants made of steel. branches tied down ribbon. The ribbon is identical to the ribbon for fighters. However, the medal is rare for its occurrence in our collections.

Courtesy of my colleague Faleristika, we see a detail of the medal, both Prussian and Austrian. Both come from a private collection.

Austria also issued a medal at this time, which is struck from captured cannon. The medal is identical to the Prussian embossing, but there is only one major difference on the obverse of the decoration. The reverse side is completely identical to the described Prussian medal. Also in Austrian medals we find on the edge of the embossing: Aus erobertem Geschuetz. the inscription is missing. This excavation was intended for non-combatants, officials, doctors, health personnel and military clergy. V. Měřička states that it was the clergy, military chaplains who wore this medal on a flowing ribbon, not on a ribbon folded in a triangle.
In the next picture we see the Austrian table medal commemorating the campaign of 1864 and a relatively well-known medal for veterans of the famous year 1864
