At the time of the Great War, with France fighting Germany and its allies, it proved to be a brutal war and a long one. Only the Battle of the Marne on September 5-12 was able to stop the German troops. The battles of the Belgians at Yser and the English at Ypres turned a classic war into a trench war. In these battles, all soldiers, regardless of rank, distinguished themselves daily for bravery. Their names were cited in the daily orders, and gradually decorations of the Legion of Honor and the Military Medal were proposed. However, this was decided long after combat and outside the unit or unit where the soldier was assigned.
It was the writer Maurice Barrés, a member of the National Assembly, who proposed and pushed for the establishment of a medal that could be awarded immediately after combat to the bravest soldiers. Indeed, the campaign of this deputy led to the creation of the decoration, and it was already established on 23 December 1814.
On February 4, 1915, in the Chamber of Deputies, it was stated that similar decorations were given to the armies of Russia (the Cross of St. George), the English and the Italians (the Medal for Bravery in three grades).
It was finally approved on April 8, 1915, that the decoration be established and called the WAR CROSS (La Croix de la Guerre). The author of the design was the medallist Bartholamé. The approved War Cross was struck in bronze at the Paris Mint. It has a diameter of 37 mm. It is a straight-armed cross, which is framed at the edges, on the obverse and reverse. Swords were inserted between the arms of the cross. In the centre of the cross is a circular medallion with a diameter of 14 mm. The medallion bears in its centre a female head in a Phrygian cap. She symbolizes France at war. The intercircle bears the inscription REPUBLIGUE FRANCAISE. The reverse side bears the same medallion and two lines of year numbers:
War Cross 1914-1915
War Cross 1914-1916
War Cross 1914-1917
War Cross 1914-1918
The ribbon is 31 mm wide, green with five equally spaced narrow red stripes. It is identical to the ribbon of the St Helena Medal of 12 August 1857.

Each citation from a regimental or brigade order was marked on the ribbon with a five-pointed bronze star, and citations from a divisional order with a silver star. If the citation was from an army corps order, the star was gold. In the case of an Army-wide citation, a palm branch (actually a laurel branch) was attached to the ribbon according to the statutes. This branch is bronze 35 mm long and 9 mm wide. It is laid on the ribbon diagonally. The branch was attached to the ribbon if, in the sense of the citation, the wearer was awarded another War Cross. There have been cases of soldiers wearing several palm branches on the ribbon. The famous fighter pilot RENÉ FOCK (1894-1953) was one of the famous fighters of the Great War and a total of 28 palm branches were fixed on the ribbon of his War Cross. René Fock was a Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour and a recipient of the War Medal. According to the War Department, more than 2,550,000 crosses were awarded between 1915 and 1918. The awarding was officially terminated on 1 March 1920.

O dva roky později rozhodl v Alžíru generál Henri Giraud(uprch ze saské pevnosti Konigsteinu) založit další Válečný kříž s novým letopočtem a to: 1943.

Založení francouzského Válečného kříže, myšlenka ocenit statečné vojáky, nachází porozumění i u dalších států Dohody.Tak byl dne 25.října 1915 založen Belgický válečný kříž,později i Italský válečný kříž a konečně dne 7.listopadu 1918 i Českoslovensý válečný kříž.
