Cross of the Yekaterinoslav Campaign

This cross commemorates the 500-verst march made by General Vasilchenko and his loyalists, from Yekaterinoslav to Crimea.

The detachment, or more precisely the remnants of the troops, about 1000 strong, leave the city 27.11.1918 for the Crimea appearing 02.01.1919. For more than a month they make their way to the Crimea, without food and forage supplies for their horses. The soldiers fight the enemy Red Guards by day, but also with bands who are just looking for loot. At night, they retreat and march. Even in these harsh winter conditions, they travel 20-30 versts a day.

The troop was composed of members of the 34th Infantry Division, the 34th Artillery Brigade, the 3rd Dragoon Novorossiysk Regiment and other supporting units. These so sorely tried soldiers, after joining the troops in Crimea, join the defense and fight against the Red Army and already as part of the Crimean-Azov Army.

As a proof of the bravery and courage shown by the soldiers during this winter march, the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Army, General P.N. Vrangel, established for all the members of the campaign a commemorative and honorary cross of the participant of the march, General Vasilchenko . (Order number 3303 of June 1920)

The cross was worn on a ribbon in the national colors (white-blue-red) on the left side of the chest. The back of the cross is plain with an engraved serial number.

Description of the decoration :

The shape of the cross is based on the basic shape of the St George's Cross. It is black enamelled with a wider white border. In the centre of the cross is a central shield, which is the municipal emblem of the city of Ekaterinoslav. (The blue shield in the centre is the letter "E" of Tsarina "Ekaterina II" (Catherine II) The letter is surrounded by ten gold stars under a gold Tsarist crown) (see picture)

The reverse side is plain, all silver, here engraved with the serial number of the award of the cross.

The cross exhibited here is just a COPY taken from a Russian sales catalogue.
