The Curtiss XP-10 was designed and built under a contract of June 18, 1928, which required a new fighter with good maneuverability and high speed at high altitudes. The basic shapes of the XP-10 corresponded to the racing XP-6A, which was ordered about year before, and with which the new fighter shared a number of features. However, the XP-10 had the upper wing bent into the fuselage so that the pilot had a freer field of view. Once again, and if we do not count about the same time rebuilt racing XF6C-6 lastly, Curtiss decided to use surface cooling made of brass sheets on the upper wing. The engine was used by the Conqueror engine, essentially the same bow as was used in the XP-6A. The fuselage structure was welded from steel tubes and covered with canvas, the wing structure was wooden and covered with plywood.

XP-10 (28-387) took over the army at McCook Field in April 1930 and first took off a month later. As expected, the pilot had an excellent outlook, but the performance was disappointing, because they were only slightly better than the current Hawks. This, combined with again unreliable and leaking surface coolers (moreover, at a time when ethylene glycol coolers were finally available), led to the type being rejected after only ten hours. The XP-10 was decommissioned by the military in August 1931 and survived as a non-flying utility at the School of Mechanics.
