Curtiss XP-10 was designed and built on the basis of the contract from 18. of June 1928, which demanded a new fighter plane with good maneuverability and at the same time at high speed at high altitudes. The basic shapes of the XP-10 match racing XP-6A, which was ordered about a year before, and that a new fighter shared a number of features. XP-10 had but the upper wing cranked into the fuselage so that the pilot freer field of view. One more time, and if not counting about the same time rebuilt racing XF6C-6 even the last, Curtiss decided to use surface cooling of the brass plates on the upper wing. To drive serve motor Conqueror, basically the same bow which was used in the XP-6A. The fuselage structure was welded from steel tubes and covered with canvas, the structure of the wings were wooden and covered with plywood.

XP-10 (28-387) was taken by the army to McCook Field in April 1930, and first flew one month later. As expected, the pilot had an excellent view, performances but were disappointing because they were only marginally better than the contemporary Hawks. This combined with the once again unreliable and netěsnícími surface radiator (at a time when already finally were available etylenglykolové radiator) led to the rejection of the type already after ten flying hours later. XP-10 was the army phased out in August 1931 and lived as a flightless aid in the school for mechanics..
