Kurt Daluege was born in Kreuzberk, Upper Silesia (now Kluczborek, Poland) into a family of clerks. In his youth he was a member of the youth organisation Wandervogel. After passing his war matriculation in 1916, he enlisted as a volunteer in the 7th Guards Regiment West. He was mainly deployed on the Western Front, where he suffered a number of injuries during the fighting. When the war ended in 1928 he was an officer in waiting. In the turbulent post-war period he was first a member and then commander of the Sebeochrana Upper Silesia formation, which participated in the fighting with Polish units. He then moved to Berlin, where he worked as a factory worker and also commanded the Berlin Roßbach Freikorps. In 1921-1924 he studied civil engineering at the Technical University. At the same time, he remained a member of various nationalist associations and was a bourgeois. In 1922 he joined the NSDAP.
During the failed November 1923 coup attempt, he led a detachment in Berlin. After the party was banned, he tried to maintain its membership in Berlin and co-founded the Frontbann organization. After the restoration of the NSDAP, he founded the SA in Berlin, holding the rank of SA-Gruppenführer from 1926 and serving as SA-Gausturmführer in the Berlin-Brandenburg district. From 1926-1928, he also served as acting head of the NSDAP Berlin-Brandeburg county. In 1926 he married Käthe Schwarz, with whom he had three children of his own and one adopted child. From 1927 to 1933 Daluege worked as a department head in a municipal construction company and also as a waste collection engineer. In 1930 he transferred from the SA to the SS, where he received the rank of SS-Oberführer. He organized units that attacked communists and other opponents of the Nazis. From 1931 to 1932, he was head of SS Section III East in Berlin. In 1931 he dealt with the Stennes revolt. In 1932 he was elected a member of the Prussian Landtag. In the same year he was appointed SS-Gruppenführer and commander of SS Group East (Berlin).
After the Nazi takeover, he was appointed Commissioner for Special Use and head of the Daluege Special Department in the Prussian Ministry of the Interior, where he was tasked with getting rid of political opponents in the ministry and the police. In May he was appointed ministerial director and head of the police department, in September commander of the barracks police, in July Prussian state councillor, and in November he was elected to the Reichstag in the constituency of Berlin-East. After the Night of the Long Knives, he was put in charge of the purges in the SA Groups Berlin-Brandenburg, Pomerania, the Border Mark, Silesia and the Centre. As a reward, he was promoted to SS-Obergruppenführer. When the Prussian and Reich Interior Ministries were merged in November 1934, Daluege remained head of the police department. In March 1936 he suffered his first heart attack. This time it did not affect his ability to work much, so in June 1936 he was appointed commander of the Order Police and at the same time Himmler's deputy as head of the German police. Daluege thus commanded all uniformed branches of the German police, including various auxiliary units and fire brigades. Although Daluege was losing the battle with Heydrich for power, Hitler never forgot that he had remained loyal to him in both 1923 and 1931, which insured his staying in office. In April 1942, he was appointed to the rank of SS-Oberst-Gruppenführer and Colonel-General of Police, the highest rank only four SS officers received. After Heydrich's death, it was Daluege who replaced him as Acting Reich Protector for Bohemia and Moravia in June 1942. It was he, therefore, who orchestrated the brutal reprisals against the Czechoslovak population - most famously the extermination of Lidice. In June 1943, he was dismissed as Protector. In the same month he suffered a second, this time more severe, heart attack and was forced to take a longer leave of absence. Hitler rewarded his services with a gift of six hundred thousand Reichsmarks.
In May 1945, Kurt Daluege was arrested by British military police in Lübeck and handed over to Czechoslovakia a year later. On 23 October 1946, the Prague People's Court sentenced him to death by hanging; the sentence was carried out the same day in Pankrác Prison.
