The predecessor of the barracks was Detmold Airport. It was established in 1934 as a small civil glider airfield. It was taken over by the Luftwaffe in the mid-1930s and was used mainly by training units until the end of the war.
In April 1945, it was occupied by the US Army, which modified it and continued to use it as an airfield.
In June it was handed over to the British Army. The latter stationed its troops there and renamed the site Hobart Barracks. Sometimes the name RAF Detmold is also found, as the RAF observation unit was based here.
With the end of the Cold War, British troops gradually left the base and it was handed over to civilian administration in 1995.
The airfield was reopened in 1999 and serves the local aero club.
