Guards Lieutenant Colonel Georgy Georgievich Petrov

Georgy Petrov was born on December 8, 1910 in St. Petersburg in the family of a clerk. After completing seven grades of elementary school, he apprenticed as a turner. In 1931 he joined the army and graduated from the Engel Military Aviation School for pilots in the same year. As a pilot of the 26th Fighter Aviation Regiment in the capacity of deputy squadron commander, he took part in the battles of the Soviet-Finnish War. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner for his combat activities.

From the first day of the invasion of the Soviet Union by the troops of Germany and its allies (22 June 1941), he fought on the North-Western and Leningrad Front. In early August 1941, just two months into the war, the squadron commander had 154. IAP Captain G.G. Petrov had already completed 120 combat sorties in I-16 and MiG-3 aircraft. He has participated in a total of 20 aerial dogfights, during which he shot down three enemy aircraft. He shot down the first, a Junkers type, on 03.07.1941 and the very next day, while escorting bombers, he shot down a Messerschmitt Bf-109 in cooperation with Alexey Strozhakov (pictured below). On 07.06.1941, again while escorting bombers, Petrov spotted six approaching enemy fighters. He instructed the pilots of his swarm to make a frontal attack on the German formation, which did not hold and broke up. In this fight Petrov shot down one plane, his swarm pilots shot down two more. In one of the other fights, one of his pilots was shot down and managed to jump out of the burning aircraft. Since the days of the gentlemanly duels of the Great War were long gone, the German pilots tried to shoot down the parachuting pilot. Petrov managed to parry their attacks, but in doing so his machine was hit in the fuel tank and caught fire. Despite this, Petrov kept firing at the enemy, and only at the last moment, burned on his hands and face, he too jumped out of the plane. Both downed pilots managed to reach their unit together.

For these, and many other, heroic actions, the command 154th Fighter Aviation Regiment proposed to award G.G. Petrov with the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated 16.01.1942 he was granted the right to wear the title Hero of the Soviet Union and at the same time he was awarded the Gold Star (№ 637). At the same time, he was awarded the Order of Lenin. Six months after the decoration, he was put in command of the 26th Fighter Aviation Regiment, belonging to the 7th Fighter Aviation Corps of the PVO. It was under his command that the regiment was renamed the 26th Guards Fighter Air Defence Regiment on 22 November 1942 "for its exemplary performance in the performance of combat tasks and for the courage and heroism shown in doing so".

Fortune turned its back on Guards Lieutenant Colonel Petrov on 13 June 1944, when he was killed in an aerial mishap. By that time, he had flown more than 400 combat sorties in MiG-3, I-16 and P-39 Airacobra aircraft and had shot down 15 enemy aircraft in the process. However, this figure has not been confirmed in the latest historical research. However, this does not detract from the fact that Georgy Petrov was a valiant pilot and deserves our respect, as do millions of others who fell in World War II.

He is buried in the village of Ropsha in the Leningrad Region.
