The company's ammunition vehicle was created following a requirement to develop an ammunition supply vehicle with a load capacity of 1,000 kg (500 kg in the vehicle and 500 kg in the trailer). This requirement dates back to 9/1937 when the development task was awarded to Borgward. Preliminary production of a series 0 of 20 units was commissioned. Schöller-Bleckmann Stahlwerke A.G. was also to provide series production after the signing of contract No. 106-5762/39, but as the company received other orders, production was not possible within the required timeframe. Production of the vehicles took place between 11/1939 and 1/1940. On 15/4/1940 the prototype was tested in Wünsdorf together with other ammunition vehicle designs (French Renault UE with trailer, gep. Mun. Schlepper Pz.Kpfw. I Ausf. A and Italian gep. Mun. Schlepper Pz.Kpfw. Fiat-Ansaldo). The VK 3.01 vehicle was considered satisfactory and its off-road capabilities met the requirements.
In 1/1943 experiments were carried out with a pair of VK 3.01 vehicles to carry heavy loads on a traverse which was mounted on pivots on both vehicles. The cargo was thus to be carried between the vehicles. The vehicles were able to turn 360°, the tilt of the vehicles could vary between 15° and 20°. Such a pair could reach a top speed of up to 30 km/h on the road, while the rear vehicle was only towed, not assisted by its own propulsion. The suspended load could be moved off-road, neither climbing nor driving on narrow roads was a problem for the vehicles. In the off-road, the vehicles could follow each other and side by side, and could change formation while driving. Handling sharp curves was problematic.

Probably only the zero series of 20 VK 3.01 vehicles were built and further development and production concentrated on other designs (VK 3.02, VK 5.01).
The vehicle Fgst.Nr. 330016 was used as a mock-up of a self-propelled gun with a 10.5 cm gun made by Rheinmetall.
