After evaluating Borgward's VK 3.01 ammunition supply vehicle design, comments on the design were made on 15 April 1940 to be applied to its evolutionary successor, the VK 3.02. The engine, armour and turning radius of the vehicle were to be retained. The vehicle was to be able to drive even after the loss of the rubber tracks. The crew fighting space was to be increased. It was to be enlarged by 5 cm and increased by 5 cm. The driver's space in the pedal area was to be increased. The side of the superstructure on the right side of the vehicle was divided into two parts. The purpose was the possibility of throwing out ammunition boxes of smaller dimensions. The sidewall on the left side of the superstructure was undivided of the original shape as in VK 3.01. As mass production was not expected anytime soon, the available Fiat-Ansaldo tractor units were to be converted to monocoque vehicles.
Borgward received an order for 400 VK 3.02 vehicles. Vehicle deliveries were set to begin on 10/1941 and were to continue at a rate of 12 vehicles per month.
