Brief history
In 2006, the Bundeswehr's Military Technical Administration decided to replace the RASIT radar system and commissioned EADS to develop a new surveillance radar. The preliminary order was for 80 radar-equipped vehicles. In 2009, EADS Cassidian delivered two demonstrators for testing.
The prototypes of the radars, designated Bodenüberwachungsradar (BÜR) in German, were manufactured in 2009 by the EADS Ulm plant. The Bundesamt für Wehrtechnik und Beschaffung (BWB) took delivery of the first machine on 19 May 2009. The tests were carried out by the Army Technical Centre (Wehrtechnischen Dienstellen). In parallel with the development of the military version, a civilian version was also being developed, which was expected to guard industrial facilities and selected border areas.
The BÜR radar used Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) technology. The BÜR system was automated and performed multiple reconnaissance tasks at once with greater reliability and accuracy. Each radar of the BÜR system was capable of replacing several conventional instruments.
It was widely expected that production of the remaining 78 radars would begin after the tests were completed in 2012, but this plan was abandoned for financial reasons.
These prototypes were assigned to unspecified reconnaissance battalions (Aufklärungsbataillon). It is not known how long the Dingo 2A2 BÜR cars remained in service, but around 2015, car number Y-428080 became an exhibit in the tank museum in Munster.
