Special fighter aircraft built to carry the Leonid V recoilless cannon. Kurchevsky. Development began in 1930.
The front part of the fuselage, including the engine, was taken from the I-5, on which Grigorovich assisted N.N. Polikarpov in the development.
The spineless low-wing aircraft had a canvas-covered metal-framed wing. The VOP was inflated to keep it out of the firing range of the DRP (Dynamo-Reactive Rifle) recoilless cannon carried under the wing.
An air-cooled Gnome-Rhone Jupiter VI nine-cylinder radial engine of 525 HP was used for propulsion.
The prototype was flown in 1931.
A second prototype was completed in 1932.
In 1933 a batch of 20 units was produced.
Production was transferred to Kharkov, where a batch of 50 more units was produced.
The Soviet machines were powered by the M-22 engine (a Soviet copy of the Jupiter) with 480 HP.
Another difference from the prototype was the wooden wings (metals were a scarce material) and the Townstead cover ring instead of the cowling of each engine cylinder.
One unit was modified as a parasite aircraft for the Zvěno assembly.
The aircraft had poor flight characteristics, the worst vice being poor corkscrew pick-up. The program was halted.
