The Iraqi Coastal Defense Force was formed in 2003 as part of the new Iraqi Army, with the main task of defending Iraqi interests (mainly oil platforms) in the coastal waters of the northern Persian Gulf (and the river delta of southern Iraq). The newly formed force initially had no equipment (the Iraqi Navy's original equipment was unusable after the military conflict, and there were no spare parts for the mostly Soviet- and British-origin equipment), and the newly recruited personnel did not have the necessary training. Therefore, initially the main task of the new force was to train at least a small number of sailors and soldiers and to acquire usable armament. This task was at least partially accomplished in March 2004, when the Navy acquired 5 of the original Taiwanese patrol boats from the Taiwan Maritime Police outfit and the first 125 members of the Navy completed their training.
On January 12, 2005, the Iraqi Coastal Defense Force was renamed the Iraqi Navy.
