The first production IS-3 left the factory gates sometime in the spring of 1945, with a smaller verification batch completed in May. The IS-3 thus did not enter World War II combat. The world did not learn of the IS-3 until 7 September 1945, when 52 of these vehicles took part in the Victory Armies' military parade in Berlin.
Production of the IS-3 ran from early 1945 until 1946, when it ended with 2,311 vehicles being built at its midpoint.
The first stage of modernization took place between 1948 and 1952, it was called the UKN/Understanding of Constructive Deficiencies. The following changes were made :
- Reinforced engine and gearbox mounts, - the clutch, which was overheating, was changed, - a change in the directional gearing, - reinforced armour under the turret, - the manual oil pump was replaced by an electric one, - the 10-RK radio station was replaced by a 10-RT and other minor changes. - cost of modifications 250 000 rubles (new tank cost 350 000)
In the early 1960s, the SovietIS-3 underwent another modernization, after which the designation was changed to [iaa]IS-3M / modernized[/baa][/uaa].:
- An escape hatch was created under the driver's compartment at the bottom of the hull, - The 12.7 mm DŠK machine gun is replaced by a more modern DŠKM, - the 7.62 mm DT machine gun is replaced by the more modern DTM, - modified commander's hatch, - the V-11 engine has been replaced by a V-54K-IS engine and received new two-stage air cleaners with centrifugal filtration in the first stage, - an electric NIKS-1 heater was built into the cooling system, - the oil tank also received its own heater, - a new fire protection system, - modified cooling and electrical equipment, - a new radio station R-113 and an internal communication set R-120, - 2 additional 200 l fuel drums have been added to the hull, - the tank driver receives a TVN-2 type night vision device, - the modernization also resulted in an increase of the vehicle weight from 46.5 to 49 t,
Visible differences :
- Side belt covers have been added on both sides - side skirts, - the side toolboxes had 4 "ribbed" hatches instead of three plain ones, - two spotlights in the front instead of one on the right when viewed from the front, - the front and rear fenders have 5 longitudinal mouldings, the rear fender is also rounded, - the engine and gearbox spacing from the bottom of the hull was increased to prevent vibration transfer, the modification was made by cutting holes in the hull and "replating" these with a slightly larger plate of similar shape, so that the increase was just the strength of the material i.e. 20 mm, only visible when viewed from the bottom,
The IS-3M were gradually moved to reserve depots in the 1960s, where they waited for many years for eventual removal and combat use. According to Russian sources, the last machines of this type were scrapped only in the early 1990s in the context of conventional arms limitation in Europe.The vast majority of them ended up in scrap.
Egypt became the largest buyer of IS-3M - 100 units in total. The IS-3 and IS-3M were also used by the Israeli army / spoils of war from the 1967 fighting / and the Korean army.
