The A-50U is the flying control and awareness center of the Russian Air Force. It is a modernization of the A-50 (production 1978-1991) and A-50M (modernization 1992-2011), respectively.
The A-50U modernization program began in the middle of the first decade of the 21st century. The prototype modernization was carried out on the A-50 aircraft with ref. 0073476298 / p.no. 58-05 and state final tests of the prototype were completed in 2009. In the same year, it was decided to gradually upgrade the in-service A-50M to the A-50U version. Although the A-50/A-50M/A-50U aircraft are similar in appearance, the main difference of the A-50U from its predecessors lies within - it's all-new surveillance radar and modified control system. Thanks to the smaller size and weight of the installed kit, it was possible to improve not only the working conditions of the operators (rest room or on-board toilet), but also to increase the volume of the fuel tanks, which allowed to extend the range and endurance in the air.
Modernization is progressing relatively slowly, however, as by the end of 2021, the armed forces have taken delivery of 7 modernized aircraft (including the prototype, which was used for supplementary tests in 2009-2014 and was taken over by the Air Force in 2014). An eighth aircraft was taken over in September 2023. Meanwhile, one aircraft (RF-50608) was damaged in a drone attack in February 2023.
