Indische Freiwilligen Legion der Waffen-SS

This unit was essentially formed by the transformation of the půwater (Indische) Infanterie-Regiment 950 called the "Indian Legion" or also the noble "Tygří Legion" (for more see. 950th Regiment (Indian)). This unit fell under the control of the Waffen-SS on 8 August 1944, when it continued its retreat towards Německ.

At this time, the unit still represented a force of roughly 2,300 men equipped with machine guns and rifles. Along with this, however, they also had roughly 6 anti-tank guns in their armament.Transport was carried out by 91 motor vehicles and 700 cars. However, the conclusion of this division is quite smiling. Hitler, after being acquainted with this unit, is said to have declared something to the effect that "The Indian Legion, that's a žert!". Subsequently, all weapons were handed over to the newly formed 18th SS-Division Horst Wessel.

The unit stayed at the Truppenübungsplatz Heuberg (i.e. the Heuberg training camp) until April 1945, when the Indians decided to move to neutral Switzerland. However, luckily for them, they were discovered by French and American troops on the way and forced to surrender before they reached their destination.

However, nothing happened to most of the ě členů of this unit on the part of the ě Britishů or the ť British stopped any investigation and accused the ěmenžů of two things - the first was a gesture of appeasement in ůč and decolonization; The second and more realistic reason is that the whole flirtation between India and Hitler is so absurd from their point of view that it was not worthwhile to dwell on this problem and give it any more importance.

Velitel:
SS-Oberführer Heinz Bertling 8 August 1944 - 8 May 1945

France August 1944 - September 1944

As far as uniforms within the Waffen-SS are concerned, the following uniforms were used:
1) the classic fieldgrey Heer uniform
2) for summer use, the German tropical uniform
3) for summer use, the Italian tropical uniform

As far as ranks are concerned - unlike the army fighting in Burma, this legion did not have any special ranks of its own, the standard Heer ranks were used and this was probably most likely also within the Waffen-SS. The other possibility is the ranks for SS divisions (not SS-division ranks).

And a few more pictures regarding this unit.

The first picture is a design of the collar patches - however, this was most likely never used as the Germans did not have the best opinion of the combat qualities of this unit. However, on the 1945 SS map this patch is found.

The second picture is of the Free Indian flag designs within the SS.
