The good aerobatic qualities of the R-3 were retained in the new aeroplane. The first prototype was completed in August 1933, and the flight trials confirmed the expected excellent performance. The Army to withdraw its interest while admitting to the aeroplane's excellent flying characteristics.
The two aircraft later flew in civilian flight schools, they were used for higher grade pilot qualifications.

Išikawadžima R-5

Engineer training aircraft Išikawadžima R-3 Shiro Jošihara in February 1932 he returned from Britain, where he was on a two-year internship. After his return he embarked, together with the main designer of the company Morijokim Nakagawou, in the design and construction of a prototype of an airplane Išikawadžima R-5. The aircraft was structurally much more modern than the older R-3 and powered it engine Cirrus Hermes Mk.IV. This engine was both more powerful, but mainly it was about invert the engine and this design has allowed a better view from the cockpit, the propeller was above and so it was possible to reduce the chassis.
The new aircraft was completed in August 1933, and they were soon launched a military test.
Army air force both prototypes have tried, quite positively rated, but their equipment is not adopted.
Both aircraft were sold to civil aviation school, where they served in the training of higher aerobatics. Their matriculation was J-BAAG and J-BISB. In 1936 they were carried out promotional flights to Manchuria.
