On 11.01.2023, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Army General Valery Gerasimov, was appointed as the commander of the grouping. His deputies are Army General Sergei Surovikin (Commander of the Air and Space Forces), Army General Oleg Salukov (Commander of the Ground Forces) and Colonel General Alexei Kim (Deputy Chief of General Staff).

According to the partial information published by the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation as of 16.07.2022, the units in the area of special operations in Ukraine are divided into clusters East ("Vostok"), Center ("Tsentr") and South ("Yug"). Lieutenant General Muradov is the commander of troop group East, operating on the Donetsk direction. Army Group South is commanded by Colonel-General Lapin and Army Group Center by Army General Surovikin.


Author's note: the division corresponds to the territorial scope of the Russian military districts - Eastern, Central and Southern.
