As part of the typing developed by the VTÚ (Military Technical Office) in 1947, a request arose for an artillery tractor in the weight category of 8-10 tons. The company ČKD Sokolovo was entrusted with the development. The project originally bore the designation KH 8 T, later KOTRA-8. The company developed a project on July 31, 1950, and the VTÚ approved it that year. Due to the canceled typing, it was probably suggested at 11.1.1951 that components from Tatry T-111 be used in the construction instead of the originally entered specification of the use of components from the 3t truck project V3T. Other requirements for the new tractor have also changed and this would lead to long delays. Therefore, it was decided that the first prototype will be made according to the original specifications, the next will be with a correction from Tatry T-111. The first prototype carrying ev.č.72312 was completed on 5.5.1951 and subsequently (until 9/1951) passed factory tests. There were constant failures and several unsuitable design errors were found, which the factory had to repair and solve. The Army took over the prototype on October 1, 1951 and conducted its own testing (including comparative tests with KM m 11 and sWS in days 15.5.1952 to 6.6.1952), which, however, again proved the immaturity of the structure. Other failures and repairs followed (tests were interrupted three times in total). Testing took place until 15.12.1952 and the prototype covered a total of only 525 km. The vehicle turned out to be unsuitable and the structure needed reconstruction. The allegations concerned low ground clearance, front-wheel drive overload, large wheelbase and small approach angles. Whether the reconstruction took place and another prototype was created is unsubstantiated. The final unflattering report on this type was made in 3/1954 and the project was canceled. As early as 1952, however, a new 8-ton tractor project was created as a replacement for the Kotra-8, namely PPT-8.
