The KRI Nanggala (turret number 402) is a German-built Type 209/1300 conventional attack submarine, locally referred to as the Cakra class. She has been in service since 1981 and is one of only two submarines of this class in the Indonesian Navy.

On the night of 20-21 April 2021 (local time, in Europe it was the early evening of 20 April 2021), the submarine was conducting an offshore torpedo training exercise, which was to take place roughly 95 km north of the island of Bali. At 03:00 on 21.04.2021 (20:00 20.04.2021 UTC), the submarine captain requested permission to launch a live torpedo SUT. After receiving permission, the submarine began preparations for firing, with the torpedo launcher flooding (part of the procedure that precedes a torpedo launch) at around 04:00 local time. The last communication with the submarine took place at 04:25 when the command was given to fire the torpedo from tube 8. Attempts to re-establish communication were unsuccessful and at 09:37 local time the Navy officially informed the authorities of the missing and presumed sunken submarine. In the area where the submarine was operating, the sea reaches depths of up to 1 500 m, and the submarine has a theoretical hull resistance to a depth of 500 m (practical resistance tests have only been carried out to a depth of 240 m).

There were 53 persons on board the submarine at the time of the accident, including 49 crew members, 3 armament specialists and the controlling commander (Navy Colonel Harry Setyawan, Commander of the 2nd Fleet Submarine Detachment).

According to information released by the salvage teams on 22.04.2021, the crew of the sunken submarine should have run out of oxygen on 24.04.2021 at 04:00 local time (20:00 UTC, 23.04.2021). During the search for the submarine, salvage teams found several oil and diesel slicks on the surface in the area where the submarine was operating, but could not determine with certainty whether they were related to the submarine. Three submarines (including the latest KRI Alugoro), five aircraft and 21 warships were involved in the rescue operation, with Singapore and Malaysia with their specialised snorkel rescue vessels also joining the rescue operations. Australia and India have also announced assistance, and the USA has deployed its P-8 Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft.

According to published information, underwater movement at 2.5 knots has been detected in the area, but not enough information has been obtained by the survey assets to determine the location of this source. Another vessel detected a large magnetic object at a depth of 50 to 100 metres. According to Indonesian media reports, rescue teams have targeted an area roughly 40 km north of Celukan Bawang (Bali) with an area of 10 nautical miles, in which they have pinpointed 9 locations where the submarine could be located.

Meanwhile, search teams have recovered several items from the sea that came from the submarine - equipment protecting the torpedoes, bottles of lubricant, even prayer rugs. These items could only have been recovered from the submarine by mechanical damage to the hull, and the crew must have run out of oxygen in the meantime. For the above reasons, the salvage operation was changed on 24.04.2021 to an operation to locate the wreck of the submarine.
The discovery of the submarine wreck was announced by the Navy on Sunday 25.04.2021. The wreck was discovered at a depth of 838 metres approximately 1,4 km from the site of the last submersion and was broken into 3 pieces.

Což dokazují některé nalezené předměty, například: olejnička a modlitební koberečky.

Po ponorce pátraly lodě a letadla z Indonésie, Austrálie, Malajsie, Singapuru a USA.
