The tractor in this topic is not a military type, but the original intention for its development and possible serial production was an effort to include the type in the army. The shape and construction was based on the legendary German tractor, which was said to have "conquered" the demanding terrain of large areas of the Soviet Union.

Already during World War II, Soviet users appreciated the quality of captured German artillery tractors Steyr RSO. The production of a similar machine was considered, which would be almost a copy of a German tractor. Requirements were made to handle a thrust of about 3.5 tons and the use of the engine ZIS-5M with a power of 75-77 horsepower. The machine was to be used to tow cannons. However, the development of this type was delayed, because at that time, the domestic type of artillery tractor was already being produced for the needs of the units Ja-12/Ja-13. Therefore, the project of a new tractor was stopped.

The project inspired by a German tractor was "dusted" after World War II, when the need for a forest tractor/tractor to transport timber arose in the then USSR. The development of the tractor in 1946 was entrusted to Ž. Kotin working in the Kirov plant in Leningrade. The official assignment of development work on the prototypes was approved on March 5, 1947, the plan included tests of manufactured prototypes in the 3rd quarter of 1947. In the summer of 1947 it was ordered that all tractors "KT" powered by generators for wood gas ZIS-21 (45 hp at 2300 rpm). Given the environment where the tractors were to work, such a drive was satisfactory. The machines were equipped with a winch located behind the cab. In 11/1947, the first 5 pieces of prototypes were completed, which participated in forestry testing in the Volosov forest plant in the Lenindrad region. The prototypes worked and were tested for a whole year at the same time. During this period, KT-12 proved themselves and it was decided on their serial production, which began in the Kirov plant on 1.1.1949. In 1950, a version powered by a diesel engine with an output of 50 horsepower was developed, but due to the current shortage of this power unit, serial production of this version began at a later period. In 1951, production was moved to the Minsk Tractor Plant, where it was produced for 4 years with gas generators and one year with diesel engines. In 1956, production was moved to the Onega Tractor Plant in Petrozavodzko. The tractors were given the new designation TDT-40. The tractor underwent further development in the form of TDT-55M "Onežec", which can still be commonly found throughout the country of today's Russia. The production of this modification continued at least until the end of the 1990s, if it is not produced in its original or modified form even today.
