As far as I could find out, the tank was produced in a small number of just over 60 pieces and was included only in two battalions of heavy tanks (they had 21 pieces each) it was a transition to the IS series tanks (KV-85 has a turret that was used in the IS-1 and was originally designed for it). In order to allow the relatively narrow KV series tank to carry the new turret with a wider wreath, the hull was widened with circular extensions where the turret is mounted, extending the armoured hull above the tracks (these are clearly visible in the photos).

What a source it other numbers of produced pieces (102/130/146/148 pcs).

In addition to the D5T gun, the use of modified S-18 and S-31 anti-aircraft guns of the same caliber 85 mm was also considered. These were tested in the KV-1S and IS-1.

The different numbers may have been because some of the machines were rebuilt from the in-progress KV-1S (their hulls were modified and the turret was delivered from the IS-1's in-progress production - I think it was called IS-85 then) So maybe some sources count the tanks that were built from the beginning as KV-85 and others count all the built ones. I think some of the machines did not have a machine gun in the hull. Various cannons were considered and tried in addition to the U-12 cannon mentioned by Bran, but all still on modified machines KV-1S or IS-85 (IS-1)
There's a lot of confusion around this tank in general, both in the number of units built and the deployment, they were deployed basically from September 1943 when the army received the first machines until about mid-1944 when they are lost from the reports (of course it is not certain when the last machines finished but by that time the units equipped with them -for example 34th Guards Battalion of Heavy Tanks- had already rearmoured to other machines). regiment of self-propelled artillery operated 512th battalion of heavy tanks to which the machines belonged, it is a photo from April 1944 (probably from 11.4.)
