Chronology of the formation of the Republic of Kazakhstan and its armed forces during the collapse of the USSR:

17.03.1991 - All-Union referendum on the preservation of the USSR. In Kazakhstan, 88.2% of voters participated in the referendum, 94.1% of whom voted in favor of preserving the restored USSR.

19-21.08.1991 - attempted coup d'état in Moscow.

08.12.1991 - signing of the Treaty of Belovezhskaya (officially the Treaty on the Establishment of the Commonwealth of Independent States) by the highest representatives of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.

16.12.1991 - Declaration of independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

21.12.1991 - The Almaty Declaration, which considers the remaining states of the USSR, with the exception of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Georgia, as founding members of the CIS. This declaration includes the de facto removal of the powers of Commander-in-Chief of the USSR Armed Forces from the hands of President Gorbachev and the granting of these powers to the USSR Minister of Defence, Marshal Shaposhnikov.

25.12.1991 - Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev resigns.

26.12.1991 - Declaration of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, by which the USSR is officially dissolved

30.12.1991 - CIS leaders meet in Minsk, where it is decided to transform the Ministry of Defense of the USSR and the Armed Forces of the USSR into Main Headquarters of the Common Armed Forces of the CIS and the Common Armed Forces of the CIS.

14.02.1992 - Signing of the implementing agreements between the CIS member states on the creation of the Common Armed Forces of the CIS. This procedure was to allow for the gradual division of the Armed Forces of the USSR among the individual states so as to ensure a unified command during the transition period and also to protect the external borders of the CIS. Of the CIS member states, Ukraine and Moldova did not sign these agreements.

07.05.1992 - At the Russian-Kazakh negotiations in Alma-Ata, an agreement was concluded, on the basis of which Kazakhstan took under its subordination all the Turkestan Military District formations stationed on the territory of the republic. The President of Kazakhstan signed a decree establishing the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan and transforming the State Defence Committee into the Ministry of Defence.

15.05.1992 - During negotiations in Tashkent, the Collective Security Treaty is signed by representatives of Armenia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, and at the same time the last units and volumes stationed in the Central Asian republics are distributed.
