Thomas Cassin Kinkaid, born into a naval family, graduated from the Naval Academy in June 1908 and began service in the Navy on the battleships USS Nebraska and USS Minnesota. In 1913 he became involved in field ordnance engineering. In 1917-1918 he was an officer on the battleship USS Pennsylvania, and later served in the British Admiralty, and then was a gunnery officer on the USS Arizona. In mid-1919 he went to work for the Bureau of Field Ordnance in Washington, D.C.

Lieutenant Commander Kinkaid was Deputy Chief of Staff to the Commander of the U.S. Naval Department in Turkish waters from 1922-1924. He was then Commander of the destroyer USS Isherwood and served at the Naval Gun Factory from 1925-1927. For the next two years he was a gunnery officer in the fleet and assistant staff officer of the U.S. Fleet. While a student at the Naval War College, he served on the secretariat of the Naval Committee and as a naval advisor to the Geneva Conference on Disarmament, 1931-1932. From 1933-1934 he was executive officer on the battleship USS Colorado and served in the Bureau of Navigation until mid-1937. As a captain, he took command of the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis and served as naval attaché in Italy and Yugoslavia from 1938-1941. During the years of U.S. entry into the war, he commanded a destroyer division.

In 1942, he was promoted to the rank of rear admiral and assumed command of the Pacific Destroyer Division. During the last half of the year, he commanded the carrier task group of the USS Enterprise, taking part in the Battle of the Solomon Islands. In January 1943, he took command of the North Pacific theater and recaptured the Aleutian Islands for the US. In November 1943, Vice Admiral Kinkaid was moved further south to the equatorial area and assumed command of the Seventh Fleet (and also responsibility for the American advance in that area for the next two years). After the war ended, his fleet assisted in operations off the coasts of China and Korea.

Admiral Kinkaid was commander of the Eastern Frontier Fleet and the Atlantic Reserve Fleet from 1946 until his retirement in May 1950. But he then returned to active duty, serving on the National Security Training Commission from 1951-1953. He also served on the National War Memorials Commission for fifteen years. Admiral Kinkaid died on November 17, 1972, and one ship was later named after him: the Spruance-class destroyer USS Kinkaid DD-965.

28 May 1958

Dear McClintock:

I send you an autographed photograph with great pleasure.

You gave us in Leyte Gulf the first positive information of the near approach of Japanese Forces. We had a whole day to make our plans and dispositions.

Your attacks, with Darter and Dace, upon Kurita's columns, after pacing them through the night in Palawan Passage, was a magnificent performance. Not only were two cruisers sunk and a third seriously damaged but Admiral Kurita, whose cruiser flagship was sunk, was forced to shift to a strange ship, the Yamato. In so doing, he was separated from most of his highly trained and experienced staff and communications personnel which were not available to him during the naval actions of 24 and 25 October. Any flag officer who has commanded naval forces in action will readily understand what that means.

The war-time Seventh Fleet owes you a debt of gratitude which I hereby acknowledge.

With all good wishes,

Sincerely,

Thomas C. Kinkaid
