Double Hero of the Soviet Union
Became the fifth most successful fighter pilot of the VVS KA (according to the measure of independently achieved kills).
Born on 17 February 1917 in the village of Khokhly in today's Kurgan region (Russian nationality). In 1938 he was drafted into the army. At the rank of sergeant, he graduated from the Bija military pilot school and became an instructor in this "pilot school". He was transferred to the combat regiment at his own request in March 1943. He flew as a line fighter, later as a scout commander and from August 1943 as squadron commander of 240. On 7 July 1943, he shot down the lead aircraft of a nine-man group of German bombers. The following day (8 July 1943) he attacked a group of bombers alone, shooting down 2 of them. The same day he sent another German bomber down. On 9 July 1943, he scored a Bf 109. On 13 and 16 July 1943, he again scored one kill each against a Luftwaffe aircraft. In the air battles over the Dnieper River in October 1943, he achieved 14 aerial victories in a few days. By the end of that month, at the rank of Senior Lieutenant, he had flown 144 combat sorties. He had 23 kills to his credit, which he achieved alone and 3 in cooperation with other fighters. As of 2 August 1944, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for the first time.
After the war he graduated in 1955 from the Military Aviation Academy and the Military Academy of the General Staff of the USSR K. J. Voroshilov (1960). He held command positions in the SA Air Force. In 1966 he was promoted to the rank of major-general of aviation. During 1972 he retired. Zemřel 29. srpna 1996 v Moskvě.
