V Japonsku byla velmi tíživá situace s palivem, proto byla zvažována úprava letounu Ki-105 na létající tanker (viz historie).

The Ki-105 Ohtori, ('Phoenix') was a desperate project fomented in the last months of the Pacific War. With Allied attacks on ports and shipping, Japan's sources to fuel drying up. Therefore be adapted transport aircraft Ki-105 for use in transporting fuel from the oilfields still held in Sumatra to Japan. This required a very long range of 2500km, and to achieve this the Ki-105's engines drew on the transported fuel, and used 80% of it to reach Japan (plus what it used to reach Sumatra unloaded). Japan developed a process to make gasoline from pine tree oil, which saw whole forests destroyed to fill the tanks of a few fighter aircraft. In light of such desperation, the development of the Ki-105 as a gas-guzzling flying fuel truck seems almost sensible.

Brief history:
The japanese army tried to use for transportation purposes a large cargo glider Kokusai Ku-7, which only existed as a prototype and was vlekán for a medium bomber, the Mitsubishi Ki 67. In 1944, at the time these tests were conducted, however, began to be understood that this configuration is rather vulnerable and additionally Ki 67 was too good of a fighter aircraft, than to serve to the towing gliders. Therefore, it was implemented the idea for the motorization of the glider. The first prototype was completed in November 1944, it was a modification of the second nedostavěného prototype Ku-7. Modification consisted of the installation of the engines, the Ha-13Ko, when on the extended beams of the tail surfaces were connected to the engine nacelles and in the installation of the fuel tanks. The new aircraft was in the system Kitai designated as the Ki-105. Trials began in December 1944, and soon after their initiation it was evident that the aircraft is podmotorovaný, hence the development of more powerful engines, the Mitsubishi Ha-26-II.

Production continued very slowly, a transport plane not a large priority, the total was made 5-10 serial aircraft. Japan was in 1945 in a very difficult situation, apart from anything else on the parent islands was the lack of gasoline, several aircraft Otori was fitted with internal tanks for the transport of fuel. The aircraft then carried the fuel directly from the refineries along the route of the Sumatra – Japan (approximately 3 300 km), the aircraft was fueled up 4 400 l of gasoline and the aeroplane on the way to Japan and back consumed 3 500 – 3 600 liters of gasoline, but no longer the 20% of the gasoline that remained in Japan, was considered sufficient. Transport by ships or u-boats was said to be much more dangerous and japanese tankers were too rare.

There was another project of Ki-105 Otsu, where it was calculated to čtrnáctiválcovými engines Ha-102, to implement the already the japanese surrender occurred.

Allied intelligence thanks to the air survey knew about the existence of the glider Ku-7 and Ki-105, both types, however, assigned the code name Buzzard, because the Ki-105 was considered only for the motorized version of the glider..
