Chief Marshal of the Aviation Alexander Ivanovich Koldunov

- a double hero of the Soviet Union

He was born on September 20, 1923 in the village of Moščinovo in the Smolensk region ( of Russian nationality). He was drafted into the army in 1941. In 1943 he graduated from the Kačinská Military Aviation School.

In May 1943 he was transferred to the 866.IAP, armed with Jakovlevy Jak-1, in which he became swarm commander, deputy commander and squadron commander. He completed his first air battle in May 1943 over Donbas, where he accompanied the pair Il-2 flying on a reconnaissance flight to Kramatorsk. During the next accompanying flight of transport Lisunov Li-2, which were to drop supplies to ground units, Koldun's "six" entered the fight with 12 Luftwaffe fighters. Russian pilots managed to defend the Li-2, while Koldunov shot down 2 German fighters.

At the beginning of May 1944 in the rank of captain and deputy commander of the squadron 866.IAP performed 223 combat flights, participated in 45 air battles, in which he shot down 15 opponents alone and another 1 in cooperation.

On August 2, 1944, he was awarded the title Heroes of the Soviet Union for the first time. At that time, he already had 20 victories to his credit. He flew to Jakovlevu Jak-3. At the beginning of 1945, by order of the commander of the Air Force, he was included in a six-member group of fighter pilots with a special purpose (the so-called "air purification group"). Together with the pilots Gurjev, Sidorenko, Surněv, Šamonov and Šišov, they managed to achieve 32 victories by the end of the war. Of this total, 15 sent to the country Koldunov.

During the war, he made a total of 412 combat flights, participated in 96 air battles, in which he achieved a total of 46 victories.

He was awarded the second title of Hero of the Soviet Union until February 23, 1948. In addition, he was awarded three times the Order of Lenin, six times Ord of the Red Banner, Order of Alexander Nevsky, twice Order of the Patriotic War I. degree, Order of the Red Star, medals and foreign decorations. After the war, the Order for the Service of the Fatherland in the Armed Forces of the USSR III. degrees.

After the war, he graduated in 1952 from the Military Aviation Academy and the Military Academy of the General Staff of the USSR K. J. Voroshilov (1960). In 1975 he was appointed the first deputy commander and in the period 1978-1987 the main commander of the air forces and the deputy minister of defense of the USSR. In 1984 he was promoted to the rank of chief marshal aviaciji.

He was removed from command after the incredible landing of a young German man Mathias Rust with a sports plane near Red Square in Moscow in 1987 and retired.

There is also an interesting incident associated with this fighter - the downing of the American P-38 Lightning.

B. A. Smirnov in the book Heaven of my youth describes the incident as follows:

On 7. 11. 1944 a group of Soviet troops announced to the Air Force that it was approaching 2 groups of enemy aircraft - about 25-30 machines. One part attacked the troops, the other covered their colleagues from the air. The Soviet defense sent against them 8 fighters under the command of the Hero of the USSR, Captain A. I. Koldunov. Although the Soviet pilots identified the attackers as Americans, they were unable to connect with them. They did not know the wavelengths used by the Americans, and there was no time to find them. Koldunov therefore decided to make optical contact, flew to meet them and showed off his sovereign insignia. In the heat of battle, the Americans did not understand his signals and considered Koldunov's flight an initial attack. The clash was inevitable. It lasted only a few seconds, because the group attacking the ground troops interrupted their attack and flew away. The fighters exchanged several doses and also disengaged from each other. The result of the fight were four shot down P-38s and two Soviets. A number of soldiers were killed on the ground, including the commander 6. gardového střeleckého sboru general-lieutenant G. P. Kotova.

An investigation followed, during which things became clear. The whole fight was the result of an accident and a mistake. Flight documents were found in the wreckage of one of the P-38s, which showed that the Americans had mistaken the place of the attack. Instead of the town Niš they reached the 84 km distant town Priščina, which had already been liberated from the Germans. Such mistakes in navigation have occurred from time to time. The incident ended amicably, both sides apologized to each other.

Koldunov was praised for his balance and it was stated that his intervention prevented even greater losses on the Soviet side, as the Americans interrupted the attack and flew away. Some participants in the fight then attribute one of the shot down P-38 to Koldunov. This victory is then mentioned as certain by some authors
