Liberia is one of the poorest countries in the world and is exactly the type of state caught in the so-called trap that Paul Collier presents in his book Billion the Poorest. Liberia is a relatively rich country. For the last thirty years or so, this West African state has been plagued by national conflicts and civil wars, which often extend to neighboring countries - or, conversely, conflicts in neighboring countries extend to Liberia across borders.
