Prototypes of the XM1299 self-propelled gun howitzer The US Army is currently completing extensive operational testing at the Yuma Proving Ground (33°01'02.00 "N 114°15'05.00'00 "W) in Arizona with a cannon designed according to the requirements expressed in the ERCA (Extended Range Cannon Artillery) program. The purpose of these tests was to understand the survivability of a 58-caliber barrel. During the tests, it was found that excessive barrel bore wear occurs even after a relatively small number of shots. Therefore, the designers began to look into modifying the barrel, powder, and artillery ammunition design (XM654, XM659, XM1113, XM1155) to reduce the wear on the weapon while retaining the ability to destroy targets at ranges in excess of 70 km. The BAe Systems concern and unspecified factories in the US are building 20 prototypes, 2 of which are for testing and the other 18 will be delivered to the US military by the end of 2023. The first XM1299 prototype uses the M109A6 Paladin chassis. The second XM1299A1 prototype uses a recently developed chassis similar in appearance to the M109A7. The chassis of the second prototype is fitted with a 441 kW (600 hp) power unit. The transmission, tracks and some other components were taken from the M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicle.
