Additional armour TUSK / ARAT
The 2003 Iraq War exposed the vulnerability of Abrams tanks to commando ammunition and anti-tank mines in urban combat. North American designers addressed this shortcoming by developing two versions of additional reactive armour. The kits were developed as part of the Tank Urban Survival Kit (TUSK) project and are known as: The design of the additional armour allows for installation and replacement in field conditions. The additional armour kits are designed for M1A1, M1A2 and M1A2 SEP tanks.


After testing in combat conditions, 505 sets of additional reactive armour were ordered in 2006 and by 2008 all tanks were equipped with this additional protection.


In addition to the added armour, the tanks were equipped with 32 66mm calibre defensive and smoke grenade launchers. A rotatable top-opening turret with a large-calibre machine gun, operated by the vehicle commander, was added to the ceiling of the tank turret. The twin machine guns: a large-calibre machine gun and a searchlight mounted on the gun barrel, and a second one with a 7.62mm calibre mounted to the right of the main gun. In the latest Abrams tank models, the improvised turret has been replaced by a remote-controlled gunnery position. The vehicle is equipped with a field telephone connection to facilitate communication between the escorting infantry and the tank crew.


The additional armouring of the TUSK/ARAT system allows modifications to suit the requirements of the event.
