In the run-up to the invasion of Europe, the Allied experience of fighting in North Africa had shown the weakness of the inadequate armour of the American Sherman M4 medium tanks. After the development of the T-14 assault tank reached an impasse, it was decided to use a modified standard model of the M4A3 tank armed with the 75 mm M3 gun for the task. This tank was classified as the M4A3E2 and given the nickname "Jumbo". Between May 1944 and July 1944, 254 machines were so modified at Fisher Tank Arsenal.

The modification consisted, among other things, of adding 1.5 inches of armor to the front and to the tops of the hull sides. The result was the increase in frontal armor from 2.5 inches to 4 inches and side armor from 1.5 inches to 3 inches. The differential cover was replaced with a casting with 5.5 inch wall thickness which was 1.25 inches more than the original. The lights and siren were removed from the front of the hull. The transport barrel lock was slightly preĺve.
The turret was almost competently redesigned compared to the M4A3. It was quite similar to the turret of the T-23 development tank, which was used in later versions of the M4 armed with the 76 mm M1A1 - M1A2/C gun. On this turret
used the original ( from the T-23 turret) 3.5 inch M62 76 mm gun turret, supplemented by a 3.5 inch thick frontal armour block. This modified gun carried the designation T110. Most M4A3E2 machines were armed with the M3 75 mm gun, whose HE ammunition contained more explosive charge than the 76 mm HE ammunition and was therefore better suited as the primary armament of an assault tank. Gradually, the M4A3E2 also began to appear, also armed with the 76 mm M1A1 cannon. These were initially predominantly field conversions.

It was only in March 1945 that official rearmament to the 76 mm M1A1/A2 gun began. Rearmament from the 75 mm M3 to the 76 mm M1A1/A2 was relatively easy due to the T110 receiver design coming from the M62, as the firing pins were identical.
The turret itself was cast and its walls were up to 6 inches thick. The turret ceiling consisted of a welded 1 inch thick rolled steel plate on which was mounted the command cupola and oval entry hole for the loader.
The Ford GAA; 8 cylinder, 4 cycle, 60° vee gasoline propulsion unit remained unchanged. The gear ratios were slightly modified to compensate for the increased weight of the 84,000lbs (38,000kg) machine. This was reflected in the permanent mounting of the extensions on the T48's running tracks. The overall width of the running tracks was 20.1" (51.1cm). Pad pressure 14.2psi (0.997kg/cm2)

Combat deployment in Germany proved the M4A3E2's durability against even the heaviest anti-tank weapons. For example, at Fronhoven, one of the M4A3E2s belonging to the 743rd Tank Battalion was hit eight times by an 88 mm calibre projectile after being disabled by an anti-tank mine. Only one penetrated, just above the side plane above the tracks. The others bounced off the armour. (Concord 7046 US Tank Battles in Germany 1944-45 page 8)
All M4A3E2s served exclusively on the Western Front from June 1944 until the Armistice.

Beautiful shot from above of M4A3E2. Especially noteworthy are the command cupola, the massive front gun shield, and the side and front armour plating.
An identical photo is used in The Sherman at War: (2) The US Army in the European Theater 1943-45 page 43. The shot was taken at a field armament centre somewhere in France and is dated 4 November 1944. The machine shown is being prepared for handover to service after arrival from port.
