The Patriot Advaced Capability (PAC2, PAC3) anti-aircraft missile defense system is designed to protect troops and important industrial centers from attacks by aircraft, cruise missiles, and ballistic tactical or operational-tactical missiles. It is the latest modification of the Patriot PLRS, which was inducted into the U.S. Army's arsenal in the early 1980s (MIM-104A).
The Patriot PAC-2 system is based on the MIM-104 E GEM+ (Guided Enhanced Munition) single-stage missile. The missile is 5310 mm long, 410 mm in diameter, and weighs 907 kg, of which the warhead weighs 84 kg. The warhead contains tungsten-based fragments weighing 45 g. The missile can manoeuvre with an overload of up to 40 g. The speed of the missile reaches Mach 5 due to the higher thrust motor. The minimum range of the projectile is approx. 3500 m and the maximum range is approx. 75 km. The altitude range of the missile is from 15 m to 25 km, so the MIM-104E GEM+ is capable of destroying even cruise missiles at altitudes from 15 to 30 m above the terrain.
The missile's original TVM (Track Via Missile) guidance system has been modified to a dual-mode system - in the middle part of the flight, the missile is guided semi-actively based on the correction data transmitted by the VHF system up to a range of 160 km. In the final phase, the TVM's active homing is switched on, operating in the 33-36 GHz band. The system is characterised by its ability to engage small targets, including slow ones, even in heavily cluttered environments. Furthermore, the missiles can also be fired in anti-surface mode against electronic jammers, while the missile's homing system allows in-flight evaluation of the strongest signal sources.
The Patriot PAC-2 battery consists of 8 vehicles with M901 launchers, the AN/MPQ-65 main radar system, the AN/MSQ-104 fire control panel, and service vehicles.
The AN/MPQ-65 radar operates on the phased array antenna principle. It has a range of up to 100 km, the radiation pattern has been increased to 90° in the vertical plane (from the original 45°), in azimuth it is likely to be about 60° to each side. The AN/MPQ-65 can detect up to 200 different targets, evaluate 100 targets or track and guide 9 MIM-104 missiles.
The AN/MSQ 104 fire control center, using the control computer, first evaluates the target type based on the radar data and selects the optimally placed M901 launcher and missile type (this is important for PAC-3 systems see below). It then determines the point of impact and the precise guidance trajectory. Just before the missile is fired, the flight program is transmitted to the missile's control computer. During the flight, the missile trajectory is corrected according to AN/MPQ-65 data, and in the final phase of the flight the missile is actively guided.
The Patriot PAC-3 is essentially a twin of the GEM+ with a modified radar, a new FSC combat and fire decision computer, launchers with an enhanced ELES (Enhanced Launcher Electronic System) remote control system, and differentiated by the inclusion of new ERINT missiles with new launchers for 4 of these missiles.
ERINT is a two-stage missile designed to destroy high-flying very fast targets (up to 3500 m/s), mainly ballistic missiles in the final part of the flight with its kinetic energy (direct hit). The missile is 4826 mm long, 254 mm in diameter, with a launch mass of 324 kg, 151 kg after the first stage is dropped. The guidance system is said to be dual-mode, with the active radar operating in the 35 GHz band at 50 W and operating for the last two seconds of flight. The warhead is made up of two rings of tungsten spheres which are dispersed around the missile before impact to effectively cover the area corresponding to the target. The projectile is stabilised by rotation at a frequency of 30 Hz, up to 180 Hz in front of the target. In the final phase of flight, a system of 180 solid-fuel ACM steering motors in front of the missile is used to provide sufficient lateral thrust to allow extremely precise guidance.
The improved AN/MPQ-65 radar has new operating modes against targets with a small RCS (Radar Cross Section) or small effective bouncing area and against anti-radar missiles, increasing its chances of survivability. The battle control room is equipped with the Link 16 JTIDS classified data transmission system, so that the battery operator can use information from other Patriot batteries and AWACS even in a heavily congested battlefield.
There are 2-4 new ERINT missile systems out of 8 launchers in the Patriot battery. The Patriot-equipped antiaircraft regiment has 12 ERINT launchers and 36 MIM-104E launchers, i.e., 144 MIM-104E GEM+ missiles and 48 ERINT missiles.
