MAGACH 7C

מגח 7ג

History
The Magach 7A tanks had more than proved their worth in combat, but it was nevertheless decided to modernize them to implement the experience gained from the deployment and operation of these tanks. Thus was created, probably just a design but perhaps a technological demonstrator, another tank - the Magach 7B. However, it was not produced and instead its direct successor, the Magach 7C, was adopted into service.

This was based on the modification of the existing Alef turret armour to a different form. The hull of the tank remained unchanged, but the additional armour plates on the turret were modified and positioned to provide better protection for the tank and crew.

All of the approximately 400 Magach 7A and Magach 7C tanks produced were placed in reserve, and replaced in active service by the latest Israeli tanks, the Merkava Mk.3 Bet BAZ dor Dalet and Merkava Mk.4. The direct successors of the Magach 7C tank are the Sabra Mk.1, Sabra Mk.2 and most recently the Sabra Mk.3 tanks, with the difference that they were rebuilt with a completely new turret and rearmed with a more powerful 120mm gun. These tanks are intended exclusively for export and have not been accepted into IDF armament.

Description
The hull of the Magach 7C tank did not undergo any modifications compared to the Magach 7A version. The basic chassis of the tank is M60A1 / M60A3 with plates of additional armour mounted on the front, sides and bottom of the hull. In the rear section of the tank, separated from the fighting compartment by a security bulkhead, is the engine-gear compartment. The original turret of the M60 series tanks is again covered by a new additional armour, which is shaped completely differently from the Magach 7A version. This is a distinctive distinguishing feature from the Alef variant. Here the turret face is visibly sloping into a wedge, forming a very sharp angle, and there is a very distinct resemblance to the German Leopard 2A5 / Leopard 2A6 tanks. The sides of the turret are almost perpendicular and each one is made of a single piece of armour. The tool basket located at the rear of the turret has been redesigned and is slightly different in shape from the Magach 7A version. The appearance of the tank's turret is again characterized by an angular appearance with sharp angles.

As with the Magach 7A, the running gear and especially the wheel hangers had to be modified due to the increased weight of the tank. On each side of the hull there are 6 independently suspended double running wheels on torsion bars, 3 supporting pulleys, a tension wheel at the front and a drive gear at the rear. The sides of the hull are again covered by additional armour plates up to the level of the running wheels. The tanks use the same tracks as the Merkava Mk.1, Magach 7A and Magach 6B.

The heart of the tank, the powerplant, remains unchanged and is an American air-cooled supercharged diesel engine AVDS-1790-5A and an American CD-850-6BX transmission. Net engine output is 708 kW at 2,640 rpm.

The main armament of the tank remained unchanged. It is a licensed 105mm IMI M68 gun mounted in the turret with a new thermal barrel jacket (the same as the Magach 6B series) and Magach 7A). The vehicle carries a supply of 55 rounds for the cannon. The turret has a full-circle sight and the gun sight ranges from -10° to +20°. The coupled machine gun is FN MAG in 7.62 mm calibre and 3 more machine guns are on the turret roof. Again, these are 2 machine guns FN MAG at the commander's hatch and the loader's hatch, and a M2HB machine gun in 12.7 mm calibre, mounted on the gun barrel cradle. The M2HB is partially coupled to the gun and is operated from inside the tank. The primary purpose of the machine guns mounted on the turret roof is to silence the enemy's uncovered live force. The Magach 7C is equipped with 2 smoke grenade launchers IS-6 with 12 smoke grenades CL-3030 (even here it is believed that burst grenades can be fired).
The tank has a new fire control system (Matador system) completely replacing the optical rangefinder. The CCS consists of a day/night sight for the gunner, a laser rangefinder, an electronic computer to calculate the ballistic curve, and an independent sight for the commander. This version of the tank should also be equipped with a tank exposure indicator for the laser sight and a sensor indicating firing at the tank.
