In 1915/16 Ing. Hugo G. Bremer designed a new truck, the A.L.Z. 13, from which a modified truck was created, with the classic axles with wheels replaced by crawler chassis. This modification was originally called "Bremerwagen" after the designer. After the production of these vehicles was transferred to Daimler in Marienfeld (a municipality SW of Berlin, now a district of the city), the name of the vehicle was changed to Marienwagen I. In addition to test prototypes, an armoured version was built on the platform of this tracked vehicle. However, as the complicated and unreliable chassis did not prove very successful, a further modification was made. The front tracked chassis was replaced by a conventional axle with a conventional wheel. However, even this modification did not meet the expectations of chassis reliability and therefore in 1918 a new version of the Marienwagen II was created.

Marienwagen II
The final form of the Marienwagen I was not successful due to the tracked chassis, so the designers used a tracked chassis from the American firm Holt. The result was a vehicle that was quite advanced for its time, and was a precursor to later German half-track tractors of the period just before the outbreak of World War II.
However, even the Marienwagen II did not fully satisfy the army, and so a fully tracked Marienwagen III was also created, but there is no detailed information about it.

In the framework of the pokusov also produced a modified vehicle, ktoré malo namiesto prednej návpravy opäť mounted crawler podvozok. Even this riešenie however neprinieslo satisfactory výsledok.

In response to the massive use of tanks by the English and French, a proposal was made for an anti-tank armament carrier, which consisted of a Russian 57 mm L/40 (Hotchkiss) gun.

After the end of World War I, one Marienwagen II vehicle was used for conversion into an armoured vehicle for the Schutzpolizei. The vehicle was fitted with a square-shaped body made of 5-7 mm thick sheet metal. On the ceiling of the superstructure was a circular turret with a Maxim machine gun of 7.92 mm calibre.
Due to the restrictions of the Treaty of Versailles, such attempts had to be abandoned, but according to some sources about 10 vehicles were to be built. A photograph is known of this armoured vehicle, which was used in the suppression of the ultra-leftist Spartacist uprising in Berlin in early 1919.

Marienwagen II in the Latvian Army
After the end of World War I, these vehicles found themselves in the hands of the Latvian Army. The vehicles served in the Russian-German units that, with the permission of the Treaty of Versailles, fought in the Baltic region during the civil war in Russia against the communists (1919). However, German and Russian (West Russian Volunteer Army) plans to gain influence over the newly formed Baltic states (Lithuania and Latvia) failed and the newly formed states got rid of these armies.
The Latvian army was to use these Marienwagen IIs (3-4 vehicles ?) until the Soviet Union occupied the country in 1940. After that they most probably ended up in scrap.
