As well as the other great powers and the United states navy at the very end of the "great war," experimented with the discharge of torpedoes from aircraft. Initially used Curtissy R-6L but managed to carry only light torpedoes and for staff deployment have not been sufficiently robust. In September 1919 was therefore ordered torpédonosná variant of the already tried-army twin-engine bomber MB-1, in the amount of ten pieces. Basically it was nothing else than the classic MB-1 with the options under the hull podvěsit in addition to 454kg or 748kg bombs and 738kg torpedo Mark 7, with the appropriate sight for the bomber, the adjustment of the chassis to discharge any obstructing parts of the joint axis under the fuselage and removed a machine gun from the floor of the fuselage. The first of the ten ordered machines, marked Martin MBT (Martin Bomber-Torpedo) took off 4. February, 1920, after the completion of the two machines (A5711/5712) but the production switched to a modified variant of the MT. Martin MT - Navzdory chybné popisce je na této fotografii Martin MT, jak vidno z motorů usazených na křídle. MT sice používaly křídla z MB-2, místo jeho zjednodušeného dvoukolového podvozku si ale ponechaly původní čtyřkolový z MBT.
