Medal for the capture of four Swedish frigates in 1720
For the capture of four Swedish frigates at Grengam, 27 July 1720.
The medal and its foundation commemorates the battle with a fleet of Swedish battleships and the victory at the naval battle of Grengan in the Åland Islands on 7 July 1720.
The actual knocking down of the naval ships takes place on the sixth anniversary of the famous Battle of Gangut. The Russian Navy under the command of M.M. Golitsyn with a landing party of soldiers on board defeated the Swedish fleet near the island of Grengam. The undamaged Swedish ships took advantage of the favourable wind and fled to safety. However, the Russian victory was heavily paid for or out of 61 battleships, 34 were so damaged that they had to be burned. However, the victory was all the more valuable because the battle was fought in sight of the English fleet, which dared not intervene to help the Swedes. The Russians captured four large battleships. The victory was magnificently rewarded with gold medals, which were awarded to all the officers in various sizes. The non-commissioned officers received similar silver medals. Exact proof has been preserved of how, to whom and in what lot each officer received his medal. The summary is still preserved, but it is too detailed for our purposes and therefore not that interesting.
Medal description:
Obverse:
The 41 mm diameter medal has a raised edge on both sides. The bust of Tsar Peter the Great is depicted on the right side. The Tsar's cheeks are adorned with a laurel wreath of victory, and he wears a magnificent, ornate cuirass covered by a precious cloak. At the edge of the medal is a description in Russian, which translates as 'By the grace of God, Peter I, Tsar and autocrat of all Russia'.
Reverse:
The area of the medal depicts a naval engagement, a battle between the Russian fleet and a Swedish war squadron.
