Medal for the Conquest of Schlüsselburg 1702
"For the capture of Schlisselburg on 12 October 1702"
Although these medals are also found as so-called table medals, they are also a reward, a thank you and an expression of gratitude to the monarch. The original medals are struck in gold and silver with a diameter of 70 mm, and it is certainly the weight and price of the metal that matters. The medals are struck at the Admiralty Mint in Moscow and were designed by the medal maker Fyodor Alexeyev.
The medal is one of the first decorations to be produced and awarded for a specific act, and was intended to be an individual and visible reward for a brave officer
The fortress we are talking about was known in Russia under the name of Walnut. It was in the hands of Swedish troops for 90 years. On October 12, 1702 it was captured by Russian troops and bravery and combat deployment was rewarded with a number of commemorative (gold and silver) coins) as well as medals made of gold or silver.
(This fortress was 90.years at the enemy and captured in October 1702)
To honour the troops, a medal 52 mm in diameter was struck in silver and gold. These medals were awarded to the "Guardsmen" of the Preobrazhensky and Semenovsky regiments who took a direct part in the attack on the fortress on Walnut Island at the mouth of the Neva River. The medals were presented without a tab, which the soldiers had retrofitted at their own expense; for this reason, several silver medals with a simple (punched) hole for hanging on a ribbon have survived. The medal is both beautiful and rare. However, as early as the 19th century, medals as a new work were offered as a commemoration of a famous battle, especially in noble families.
