Medal for crossing to the Swedish shore
For crossing the Swedish shore
The medal was established by Decree of Tsar Alexander I on 14 April 1809. The decoration was intended for all soldiers who managed to cross the ice of the Gulf of Bothnia to Sweden in severe winter conditions, which was one of the reasons for the fall of the Swedish fortress "UMEA".
It was during the Russo-Swedish war in 1808-1809. The commander of this military group was the Russian general, later Marshal Mikhail Bogdanovich Barclay de Tolly (1761-1818).
The State Mint in St. Petersburg produced 5443 silver medals.
Medal description:
Obverse:
The letter A I (monogram of Tsar Alexander I) is crowned throughout the medal.
Reverse:
There is a simple but defining inscription across the face of the medal:
"Za переход na шведский берег - 1809"
The 28 mm silver medal was worn on the ribbon of the Order of St. Andrew.
