Medal For the caucasus expedition of 1799



The medal was established on the direct orders of tsar Alexander I. 22. January 1802. This splendid decoration was intended to reward or award of the caucasian expedition, which his scientific work has launched a 17. of October in the year 1799 under the auspices of the esteemed professors of the Russian academy of sciences.

The expedition took part in officers, geologists, engineers (rudokopci). The expedition charted the mountain border region of the Caucasus, in the foothills of the mountains of Ararat and carried out reconnaissance of possible sites of gold, silver and other needed metals. At the same time, were held talks between the tsar Pavel I. and gruzinským monarch Georgijem XII. on the free and voluntary connection of Georgia to the Russian empire.

In the time after 12. September 1801, the new Russian tsar Alexander I. already just signed a "manifesto" about the connection of Georgia to the Russian samoděržaví. Mapping of sites and opening of new mines for iron and copper was needed for the development of artillery and naval fleet. In 1804 launches state mint minting coins of silver and copper from newly discovered deposits of precious metals in the Caucasus.

The medal was produced in two versions:
- golden medals with a diameter of 50 mm
- silver medal with a diameter of 50 mm


Gold medals were made and awarded to 15 pieces and worn on the ribbon of the order of St. Alexander Nevsky as a neck decoration.


Silver medals were made and awarded to a total of 12 specimens. The medal was worn on the ribbon of the order of Alexander Nevsky hung on the neck.
