Medal of Merit for the Princely and Royal House
Medal for services to the House of the Prince and the King
Medals of this type were commonly used by European monarchs to reward or honour subjects for services to the ruling house, in the case of Serbia these are the two ruling houses :
- Obrenovic until 1903
- Karadjordje until 1941
In Serbia these medals appeared very early, they are popular and appreciated by the whole stratified Serbian society. After the Serbo-Turkish war, they are used by the " royal court " to award civil servants, intellectuals and politicians who supported the war effort even if they did not take part in the actual fighting. In later times, this medal was awarded to employees of ministries, but also to cooks, drivers, gardeners, members of the Royal Guard. On state visits, the King used the medal to reward the lower officials of the host country, which is why these medals are in our collections.
Although Serbia was economically depleted after the war, the monarch was also aware of the need to thank the committed citizens of the principality, and so this medal, which varies somewhat in appearance from period to period, became a socially valued decoration, and it was not until 1941 that even this meritorious decoration disappeared.
When the first Princely Medal for Merit for the person of the Prince and the Sovereign House was established, no one knows exactly, as there is no written document. By the decision of Prince Milan Obrenovic, the medal was intended to recognize the merits of lower officials for their services to the person of the Prince and the Sovereign House.
The medal was divided into four grades:
- Gold medal with the princely crown
- Gold medal
- Silver medal with the princely crown
- Silver medal
The manufacturer of this medal was an Austrian company :
- Rothe and Neffe in Vienna
This firm is known to us for its precise beautiful work and so these medals show all the signs of the so called " Fine jewellery Viennese work ". The medal was placed in a red etui, which bears the princely Serbian emblem on the top lid.

In 1882, Serbia became a kingdom and from that year onwards this medal of merit has the Royal Crown in its elevation. The conditions for the award are the same and closely follow the "Statute" of the Princely Medal for Merit to the Royal House .


The medal is divided into four grades:


- Gold Medal of Merit with Crown
- Gold Merit Medal without Crown
- Silver merit medal with crown
- Silver medal without crown


Medal Description :


Obverse :
In the central part of the decoration is the royal coat of arms of the Obrenovich family. On the mantle of ermine, which is surmounted by the royal crown, is placed a shield with a double crowned eagle which has the Serbian coat of arms on its chest. This coat of arms is embedded in four semicircles with the Latin motto of the royal house :
" Tempus et meum ius "


Reverses :
On the surface of the medal is the inscription in Cyrillic in four lines :


" For services to the royal house "


The ribbon of the medal is the same as that of the medal from the period of the Principality ( blue hatched - see picture ) .


The medals are struck from high quality silver and it is again the precise Viennese work of the well-known Rothe and Neffe companies. The medals without the crown have a diameter of 31 mm. The Viennese company presented the medals again in a red etui with the royal emblem on the lid.

The abdication of King Milan Obrenovic of Serbia marked the appearance of another of these meritorious decorations. However, the reign of the young King Alexander I was associated with scandals surrounding his wife Draga ( a neurotic arrogant person, née Mashin ) and so in 1903 there was a palace coup and the assassination of both King Alexander and Queen Draga .


Medal description :


Obverse :
In the surface of the medal is a beautifully crafted royal coat of arms ( coat of arms ). Below the coat of arms is a metal ribbon with the royal motto ( motto ) - VREME / I MOE / PRAVO, this is a translation of the original Latin motto reading :
" Tempus et meum ius "


Reverse :
On the back is the usual inscription spread over four lines :
For the service of the House of the King


The inscription is on the smooth surface of the reverse of the medal. This medal has fine mother of pearl on the front and back, disappearing four semicircles and the classic royal crown at the top of the medal .


STUHA :
The ribbon remains the classic blue hatched ribbon ( see picture ).


The medal is made of silver ( gilded silver ). The size is again stated as 31 mm. The medal was presented in a classic red etui. In this case it is again the Viennese company G.A.S .- ( G.A. Scheid ) .

Po zavraždění královské rodiny Obrenovičů v roce 1903 přichází na srbský královský stolec v historii Srbska již potřetí král z rodu Karadjordjevičů, Petar I ., který je v roce 1903 korunován na srbského krále. Král žil v exilu ve Francii a jeho manželka byla dcera Černohorského knížete ( krále ) Zorka. Tento osvícený král dokázal prosadit orientaci Srbska na Francii a odpoutat se od Rakouska. Srbsko se stává spojencem států tak zvané „ Dohody „ což má bohužel neblahý vliv na vojenské a politické ambice Srbska, které v roce 1914 vyústí do válečného tažení Rakouska proti Srbsku a v první fázi končí faktickou porážkou statečných Srbů. Vzhled medaile se mní nepatrně, ale hlavní změnou je barva stuhy, která je červeně šrafovaná ( stuha Rakouské medaile Za statečnost ) .
Tato emise se opět členila do čtyř stupňů :
- Zlatá medaile s korunou
- Zlatá medaile bez koruny
- Stříbrná medaile s korunou
- Stříbrná medaile bez koruny
Královská kancelář objednala první emisí medaile ještě ve Vídni u firmy G. A. Scheida. Tyto medaile o průměru 31 mm jsou zhotoveny ze stříbra. Další objednávku již vyřizuje klenotnická firma Arthus-Bertrand. Tyto medaile mají průměr 31-32 mm a jsou vyrobeny z obecného kovu a upraveny zlacením a stříbřením.
Medaile firmy G.A.S. jsou opět vloženy do klasické červené etuje se znakem na víčku .

Smrt milovaného krále Petra I. znamenala další změnu ve vzhledu medaile a jde o změnu podstatnou. Podmínky udílení a členění medaile se nemění a tak stále členíme medaile :

Medaile má průměr 32 mm a je vyrobena z bronzu ( zlacená nebo postříbřená ), ale existuji velmi vzácně se vyskytující ražby stříbrné a puncované .

Mezi hlavním výrobcem je uvedena firma „ Huguenin „, ale tuto medaili vyrábělo i několik domácích zlatníků ( výrobců ). Medaile je opět vzácná pokud je v kompletním stavu .

Král Alexandr I. využil zavraždění dvou chorvatských poslanců v letě roku 1928 a ve spolupráci s nacionalistickými srbskými důstojníky se chopil moci a v roce 1929 vyhlásil Jugoslávské království. Politické, ale i národní cítění občanů Jugoslávského království bylo kulturně, nábožensky, ale i ekonomicky zcela odlišné. Tento neuvážený krok krále znamenal počátek rozpadu království a ve svém důsledku i rozpadu Jugoslávie. Mění se i vzhled medaile. nový typ dekorace je již s panovníkem panovníkem na přední straně .
Autorem medaile je sochař a medailér Dorde Jovanovič. Zakázku na výrobu medaile řešila firma Huguenin a domácí dílna Konica Beograd. Průměr medaile je 32 mm .
Medaile je převýšena královskou korunou, která typově odpovídá řádu Sv. Sávy či řádu Bílého orla .
Medaile II. typu se liší pouze opisem na přední straně medaile :

Medaile nejsou tak vzácné a více se objevují v našich sbírkách .

V roce 1934 byl král Alexandr zavražděn v Marseille chorvatskými nacionalisty při své návštěvě Francie. Nástupcem krále se stává mladý, neplnoletý král Petar II. Dochází ke změně ve vzhledu medaile. My si jen upřesníme, že medaile se vrací k typu z období let 1921 – 1937. Medaile je popsaná v tomto článku .
Všechny typy medaile zde popsané se vydávali v etujích a jako doklad o udělení známé různé druhy udělovacích dekretů. Existuji doklady o udělení medaile z období vlády mladičkého krále Petara II. Král v udělování dekorací pokračoval v letech 1941 – 1945 i ve své emigraci ve Velké Britanii .

Furthermore, the medal bears the state emblem of Yugoslavia ( Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia, surmounted by the Royal Yugoslav Crown. Order, here it is the Order of Milos the Great with colana ( the chain of the order .
Your medal is the so called fifth type or fifth issue from 1927 -1934 ) I am attaching pictures from the book by Pavel Caro and Tomislav Muhic Honours of Serbia and Yugoslavia from 1859 -1941. The medals are divided in general :
Gold with crown
Silver with crown
and then medals without crown. The suha on the older medals is blue hatched on the newer ones is the same as e.g. RU medal for bravery. We will describe these medals in more detail in the Yugoslavia section ( as soon as possible )
