Shortly before the war into the arms of the soviet air force to implement the new strategic bombers Pe-8. The soviet air force when the finding was made, that does not have a suitable escort fighter, which would at least partially fit range. The pilot cabin was almost on the leading edge of the wing and thus to guarantee a relatively good view. The engines were used fork dvanáctiválce AM-37. The aircraft flew at the time of the ambush of the USSR.
The soviet air force, however, if needed in the first place is the aircraft and so the project has been DIS postponed. Aristyom Mikoyan to him returned after the evacuation and edited by the project to the accompanying, battle, bomber and torpedo aircraft. Mikulinovy engines were no longer available, so it was used, on the basis of the command of the new Švecovových čtrnáctiválců ASH-82F on the higher performance and lower výškovosti. The tests were not fully completed and while the machine was recommended for serial production, was not built, because all of the tasks proved to meet the already produced Pe-2.
