History:

First let me remind you of one important thing – Japan was among the pioneers in the use of aircraft carriers. The japanese navy in 1919, the shipyard Asano in Jokosuce set itself the task to build aircraft carriers, in November 1921 was a hull running on the water, and in December 1922 it the navy has included in its status, its name was Hosho (Members). Its completion was ahead by a whole thirteen months the british aircraft carrier HMS Hermes, whose construction started already in the year 1918. The entire construction took place for a hearty british help.

The japanese navy in their original plans envisaged for their boat line aircraft the Gloster Sparrowhawk, these aircraft, in the number of 90 aircraft, bought the Japanese in 1919 in the Uk. Used were mainly on land bases and only ten machines have been adapted for use on an aircraft carrier. Modified Sparrowhawky were finally used only for a short period of testing on the battleship Fuse (Jamaširo). The battleship was on one of his front gun tower of the attempted flight of the rig, which was used for training. In Japan, however, had already advocated the idea of producing purely own construction, which was finally logic, Japan would not be dependent on the supply of weapons from abroad.
The consequence was that in 1920 the company was は 三菱内燃機製造会社 - Mitsubishi Nainenki Seizo Kabushiki Kaisha in Nagoya invited to initiate work on a completely new project of the aircraft for the then still uvažovanou aircraft carrier. Required to have all three categories of aircraft fighter, bomber and reconnaissance.

For the japanese designers who have just started with their own designs, such a scope of work too large. The japanese, however, came out a great move, working the invitation in February 1921, in Japan has taken so far, the main designer, just the defunct british aviation factory the Sopwith Aviation Company, Herbert Smith and what, moreover, was accompanied by seven of his colleagues. Helbert Smith took charge of the design works and it right on all three of the required categories of aircraft. The fastest progressed work on-board a fighter jet, that we will pay attention. Recall yet, that this was the first onboard fighter in the world, which has been for this purpose designed and built.

Prototypes.

The first prototype was designated the Mitsubishi (Micubiši) 1MF1, it was a biplane celodřevěné structure, which was covered with canvas. The wings had unequal span, the upper wing was slightly smaller, but the ends of the wings above the wings. Aircraft powered inline engine Mitsubishi (Micubiši) Hi, which was a license production of the engine Hispano-Suiza 8, the hallmark of the prototype was a large frontal radiator of the automotive type. The armament was typical for its time - two synchronized machine guns, Vickers the caliber of 7.7 mm. Landing equipment conform to the british pattern, below the center line of the chassis were small kotvičky, which served to capture lengthwise on the deck of the ship several lan. Airplane landing so he was led to nevybočil from the direction, of the capping should take care of the crosslinked pulled the rope. If a transverse rope captured at a time when the aircraft still great speed, the danger of its overturning. How is to see the way of landing aircraft on the deck of the ship, had a long development path.
The first prototype flew in 1921, pilot William Jordan, who arrived with Herbert Smith to Japan. Námořnici were tests satisfied and adopted it under the designation "Naval deck fighter aircraft type 10", (the tenth year of the reign of the emperor Jošihita). The next year after the adoption of the armament took place a variety of adjustments, which have made carried out the tests. It was built the second prototype, marked 1MF1A on which had the upper and lower wing of the same span, and this extension of the upper wing necessitated the change of the shape of the wings. For the third prototype the change was made tail marked was 1MF2.

Mass produced machines

The first serially produced aircraft was a version marked 1MF3 or also the type of 10-2, this version has seen a significant aerodynamic improvement – was removed archaic-looking radiator of the automotive type, the motor was just kapotován and between the struts of the chassis are installed two drum coolers type Lamblin.
The following subverzí marked 1MF3A was introduced more modern-looking of the SOP. The version of the 1MF4 there has been displacement of the cockpit forward, and the forward shifted and the bottom of the wing. Version 1MF5 has brought with it only a few substantial changes, and since 1928 has been in production practice 1MF5A, he had a slightly enlarged wings, flying boats landing on the lower wing floats, for the case of an emergency landing on the sea level, just after they had pilot to drop the landing gear and floats should the aircraft maintain on the surface. Production was discontinued in 1929 dohotovením 138. of the aircraft.

Operational service
Serial machines were operational deployment on the aircraft carrier Hosho (1923), Akagi (1927), and the Kaga (1928). The aircraft was quite popular, pilots was appreciated by its reliability and durability. Retired on aircraft carriers it since the 1930s gradually replaced the aircraft Nakajima A1N, at that time already Type 10 started to lag behind foreign more modern competitors. Your task this type of fully fulfilled with its help familiarize the pilots, captains and on-board staff with the operation of fighter aircraft on the decks of aircraft carriers.
