Brief history:
The leadership of the factory Mitsubishi Nainenki Seizo Kabushiki Kaisha has decided not to wait for the order from the headquarters of the naval air force and entirely on their own initiative to stand up and later will also demonstrate to representatives of the navy, advanced reconnaissance aircraft for the aircraft carriers. The new aircraft was to replace the already aging
"On-board reconnaissance aircraft, the type 10" (2MR12MR4), which has been in service since 1922 and for which construction was Herbert Smith.

Japanese engineers Nobushiro Nakata and Takao Tokunaga under the direction of Dr. Alexander Baumann designed the plane really modern-type design of the aircraft. It was a relatively small biplane whose lower wing was of all-metal construction of the oval tubes (profile Rohr), coated aluminum panels, this created a watertight sections, which should prevent the sinking of the aircraft during an emergency landing on the sea level. Landing drops were slit, which was also a novelty and, moreover, the ailerons can be used also as a flaps. Overall, the design of the aeroplane lightened. Two prototypes were completed in 1927 and at the same time they were allocated the designation 2MR5 (2= two-seater, M= Mitsubishi, R= Reconnaissance, therefore, exploratory and 5= the fifth type in the order)

The test, which the naval air force launched yet in the same year didn't turn out favorably, the aircraft was reproached for a very difficult piloting, which was incompatible with the traffic on the decks of aircraft carriers. Further work on this type of have been stopped and the development is completed, in 1927, it was already the second failure of the factory Mitsubishi (after the Mitsubishi 1MF9 Taka), a certain contribution was the acquisition of new knowledge and experience, which designers can later use e.g. in the construction of powerful Ki-15 / C5M.
