Mk-15 Phalanx - cannon system designed to destroy targets in close proximity to the ship. Primarily designed to destroy anti-ship missiles and other air targets. For this weapon system is used abbreviation CIWS (Close-In Weapons System).

Mk-15 Phalanx is characterized by the ability to search for and track a target and then shoot that target with great cadence and efficiency.

The system itself consists of a 6-barrel 20 mm Gatling cannon, search and tracking radar. To increase the effect, sub-caliber ammunition made of heavy metals (eg depleted uranium) is used, the core (penetrator) having a diameter of 15 mm. The system achieves a cadence of 3000 - 4500 rounds/min. To reduce the consumption of ammunition, it is possible to set firing in doses with a length of 60 or 100 rounds.

Mk-15 Phalanx was first used in the armament of surface lavids in the 70s of the 20th century. Several versions have been created since then:
- Block 0 - designed against low-flying anti-aircraft missiles with a flat flight path
- Block 1 - improved search radar to improve detection of high-speed missiles, increased amount of ammunition, increased cadence up to 4500 rounds/min using a pneumatic cannon propulsion system.
- Block 1A - characterized by an improved fire control system based on digital technologies
- Block 1B - Infrared detection systems added to the fire control system, improving the radar's ability to intercept approach and anti-ship missiles.
- Baseline 2C - a modular version of the system, allowing easy adaptation of the Mk-15 fire control system to other systems on board ships.

Tactical-technical data:
Weight: 5625 kg - 6120 kg
Weapon: M-61A1 Gatling
Caliber: 20 mm
Number of main: 6
Cadence: 3000 - 4500 rounds/min
Magazine capacity: 989-1550 rounds
Type of ammunition used: APDS (skr.)[/I] (podkaliberná, with heavy metal core)

Principle of operation: the system creates a cloud of projectiles in the flight path of the projectile, which ruptures the projectile with its kinetic energy.

Phalanx Block 1B
is further improved over version 1A by OGB (Optimized Gun Barrels) system to reduce scatter. The optimized barrels are 18 inches (45.7 cm) longer and significantly thicker. The infrared system operates in the 8-12 micron range.
