Yamaji, Motoharu

Born in Tosa province. At the age of 13, he lost the sight in one eye, but even this did not prevent him from beginning his successful military career as a company commander during the Boshin War. During this conflict, he participated in the Battle of Toba-Fushimi and the subsequent campaign in northern Japan. During this conflict he was appointed brigade commander.

After the war in 1871, Yamaji goes to Edo and becomes a lieutenant in the newly formed Imperial Army. During the Sacuma Rebellion, he commands the 4th Infantry Regiment from December 1875 to March 1877 and becomes a colonel, then chief of staff of the 3rd Infantry Brigade, and then commands the 3rd Infantry Regiment and the 12th Infantry Regiment.
In February 1881 he becomes a major general and is appointed commander of the garrison of Kumamoto (Chindai). Yamaji subsequently commands the Osaka garrison, the 2nd Infantry Brigade, and again the Kumamoto garrison. In December 1886, the general becomes a lieutenant general.

In May 1887, he becomes a baron. In May 1888, the Imperial Army is reorganized into divisions and Yamaji becomes commander of the 6th Division and then the 1st Division. Along with his troops, he participated in the battles of Jinzhou and Lushunkou as well as the capture of Port Arthur, during the First Sino-Japanese War. In August 1895, he becomes a viscount (shishaku).

He dies in Hōfu, Yamaguchi.
