Cannon NS-23 caliber 23 mm
This air cannon was one of a new generation of cannons that appeared in the second half of World War II in the armament of the USSR Air Force. NS-23 was just like NS-37 and NS-45 product of constructors AENudelman and ASSuranov. In many respects, it surpassed its predecessor cannon VJA-23 and was adopted in 1944 into the armament of the Air Force.
For the NS-23 cannon, its designers focused mainly on reducing the effects of their own fire on the structure of the aircraft. The automation of this cannon was based on the use of a short recoil barrel, which managed to reduce the overall stress on the cannon and the entire structure of the aircraft. The solution of the weapon itself made it possible to reduce its weight by almost half compared to VJA-23. Furthermore, the designers, according to the requirements of the Air Force, focused on extending the operating time without cleaning and lubrication, as well as on a simple and trouble-free supply of cannon ammunition.
The NS-23 had a swivel closure with mechanical match initialization and a strand pre-spring mounted in a tube on the side of the case. This spring also served to tension the weapon itself. When moving backwards, the breech was accelerated by a lever accelerator. When moving forward, the breech was caught by the auxiliary catch of the trigger mechanism during each functional cycle. During the time when the breech was at rest, the ammunition was delivered and at the same time the empty cartridge was ejected from the weapon. A part of the so-called recoil energy transmitted via a swinging slide to the feed spring was used to deliver the charge. The final release of the breech (from the auxiliary catch) occurred during the run-down mainly to the front position.
The serial cannon NS-23 was characterized by a reliable automatic function, low weight, high cadence and trouble-free maintenance. One of the variants of this cannon marked NS-23s (with synchronizer) was mounted on aircraft La-9 / La-11. The cannons fired around the propeller. In the version without a synchronizer, for example, in the number of four pieces was mounted in aircraft Il-10. Later, the NS-23 was installed in the Mig-15, Jak-23 jets.

Russian 23mm calibre air cannons use (except for VJa) 23x115 ammunition with energy of impact about 47 kJ, about half of the 23x152 calibre of the VJa and ZU-23, the projectiles and fuses are practically identical.
