Note: Note: | Bullet weight: 1,930 g Grenade weight: 1,065 g The designers sought to adapt the barrel of the NS-45 gun to fit the Yak-9K. The large diameter barrel had to be installed in the propeller shaft. In the end, the assembly was successful (the barrel thickness was reduced to 4mm), and 53 of these battle Yaks were produced. Firing the NS-45 gun had a devastating effect on the actual Yak structure, despite the fact that the gun was equipped with a muzzle brake. The firing itself had to be conducted in single shots because the aircraft would veer off during firing, losing speed until the aircraft crashed. The engine VK-105PF suffered from the shock of the shots so much that it leaked coolant, oil and vibrated. The magazine was probably for 15 rounds, but there are also sources that mention 29 rounds. | Weight of charge: 4.255 l Weight of projectile: 2,348 lb A small pre-production batch of NS-45-equipped (with 15 rounds, another source states 29 rounds) Yak-9K fighters was built at the beginning of 1944 for service evaluation. But due to the troubles caused by the recoil (only one-shot-"salvos" could be fired at near top speed without seriously affecting aircraft handling and the stress imposed on the aircraft's structure often caused leakages and cracks of water and oil pipes) this version did not go into mass production. Furthermore, the "universal" gun mounts of the TK and UT variants of the Yak-9 were able to accommodate the usual guns from 20 to 45mm caliber with only minor modifications to the attachment points and ammunition supply and there may have been some examples equipped with NS-45 guns, too: Sources: | http://umvk.narod.ru/files/oruzh22.html http://www.aveaprom.ru/oruzie-push-ns45.php russianammo.org http://avia.awardspace.info/5/02c/ns-45/index.php http://ram-home.com/ram-old/gun-ns-45.html author archive |
