Lieutenant Kanno Naoshi

Born in Korea on October 13, 1921. In 1938, he entered the Naval Academy. After graduating from it, he joined as a second lieutenant to command the anti-aircraft detachment aboard the battleship Fuso.

In July 1942, he began flight training, which he completed in September 1943. His first combat assignment was as a company commander within 343. Kokutai (first formation) and fierce fighting over the Marianas. After disbanding the unit due to losses, transferred to 306. Hikotai within 201. Kokutai, where he engaged in combat over Jap Island (where he even collided in a frontal attack with a B-24 Liberator, but bailed out safely) and over the Philippines.
Originally, he was to become the first commander of the kamikaze unit, but at the time of the unit's establishment he was absent due to a business trip to Japan for new aircraft, and so the command post instead went to Lt. Seki.
During the second formation of the elite 343. Kokutai, with more than 30 air victories to his credit, he was given command of the 301st in its formation. Hikotai. He won 18 more aerial victories at its head before he was missing on August 1, 1945, after a battle with the B-24 Liberator of the 494th. Bombardment Group (Heavy).
