history
The unit was formed on 1 February 1918 at Catterick airfield as a bombardment unit, but never gained operational capability and disbanded on 4 July that year.
Reactivated on 29 June 1941 at Habbaniyah in Iraq, but moved to Haditha airfield the same day. He conducts fighter and reconnaissance missions during the attack on Syria, primarily patrolling over oil pipelines. However, as early as 12 July, it ceases to exist, being redesignated 261 Squadron.
The most glorious chapter in the squadron's history begins on 2 August 1941, when it is re-established at Kasfareet Air Base in Egypt as a fighter squadron, but initially consists of ground personnel only. It is not until early the following year that it is manned and receives aircraft. It is then involved in combat in North Africa (Western Desert and the air defence of Egypt). In November 1943 part of the unit operates from Cyprus in the Aegean area. In April 1944, it is transferred to the UK, where it takes part in 2. TAF participates in the landings in France and from bases in liberated territory carries out mainly attacks on ground targets until almost the end of the war. During this period it is briefly commanded by Czechoslovak fighter ace Otto Smik.
Its last incarnation begins on 11 January 1956, when it is reestablished at Chivenor as a fighter training unit within the 229th OCU. This period ends on 1 November 1958, when it is disbanded.
