history
The unit is formed on 1 March 1918 at Wyton airfield as a bombardment unit, but is disbanded on 4 July 1918 before completing training, and its personnel are added to existing squadrons in France
Resumed on 16 June 1941 as a fighter at Portreath, after completing training it is involved in offensive operations over the continent, later retired and disbanded on 13 February 1944.
Re-established on 5 April 1944 as a fighter by renumbering 186. Squadron at Lympne, participating in the invasion of Europe and patrolling against V-1 missiles, from October 1944 as part of the 2nd TAF, operating from airfields on the continent and until the end of the war, in addition to attacking ground targets, conducting reconnaissance and deploying against German Me 262 jet fighters. After the war stationed in Norway (20.06.1945-04.11.1945) as part of the air defence. Upon return, it is re-equipped with jet technology and disbanded on 1 February 1947 by renumbering as 72nd Squadron.
Reinstated on 1 August 1953 as a fighter at Brüggen in Germany as part of the British NATO forces, but disbanded again on 31 May 1957.
Meanwhile, it exists for the last time from 01.12.1959 to 23.08.1968 as a unit armed with Thor tactical missiles.
