history
The unit's immediate predecessor was formed on 9 December 1917 in France as 14 Squadron RNAS (Royal Naval Air Service) as a heavy bomber and carried out night raids on enemy targets in Belgium and northern France until the end of the war, from 1 April 1918 after the merger of the RFC and RNAS under the name 214 Squadron RAF. After the end of the war it is transferred to Egypt in July 1919, where it ceases to exist on 1 February the following year, merging with 216th Squadron.
It is re-established on 16 September 1935 at Boscombe Down as a night bomber unit. After the outbreak of World War II, it engages in a night bombing offensive, conducting raids on enemy targets in Germany and occupied Europe. In January 1944, after rearmament, its main activity became radio-electronic warfare (mainly jamming enemy radars) and it performed this task until the end of the war.
On the same day, however, it is re-established as a bomber base at Amendola in Italy by renumbering 614th Squadron. It subsequently moved to Palestine and later to Egypt, but ceased to exist on 15 April 1946 when it was renumbered 37 Squadron.
However, it is reincarnated again in the same year (4 November) at Upwood as a bomber squadron. It takes part in the fighting with the Kenyan rebels (Mau-Mau Rebellion).
The shortest chapter of its existence begins on 15 June 1955 at Laarbruch base in Germany, where it is reestablished as a photo reconnaissance unit, but on 1 August of the same year it is renumbered 80 Squadron.
With the arrival of the Valiant strategic bombers (and tankers), the squadron is reactivated at Marham on 21 January 1956. It participates in operations during the Suez Crisis in 1956 (Operation Musketeer). The squadron is disestablished with the retirement of the Valiants on 28 February 1965.
The final chapter of the unit's history is its operation at Marham Base as a refuelling unit armed with Victor aircraft between 1 July 1966 and 28 January 1977.
